Entertainment News mainly reports the activities of entertainment industry, especially the information about films, TV programs, songs and other recreational activities. The information and whereabouts of celebrity's personal life are particularly concerned about. In recent years, entertainment industry has matured and prospered and entertainment news has become one of the fastest growing and most eye-catching types of news which is often talked about by people in their leisure time. At present, however, scholars have ignored many kinds of phenomena in entertainment news or just focus on journalism studies of it rather than from diversified perspectives. The background of entertainment news, the popularization of it and media ethic are studied from the perspective of journalism studies. This paper tries to apply the theory of cohesion and coherence to analyze English entertainment news text in Time magazine.Cohesion and coherence are two of the most important objects of study in text analysis and this paper intends to concentrate on these two aspects and their relationship in English entertainment news text. In the database of EBSCO, a lot of English entertainment news texts are obtained through the use of a computer. The study of cohesion is based on the statistical analysis of the frequency of various types of cohesive devices in a corpus of English entertainment news text, where quantitative method is adopted. A computer has been applied to locate those cohesive devices and count their frequency. Textual coherence is approached from cognitive and pragmatic perspectives. The analysis of empirical data from the corpus shows that lexical cohesion is the dominating cohesive device and other grammatical cohesive devices carry little weight in entertainment news text. Qualitative method was used for the analysis of textual coherence of English entertainment news text, which reveals that coherence attribution of entertainment news text is a mental process with pragmatic-cognitive inference as a major resort. This process has no significant difference from the mental process of other common English texts. But pragmatic-cognitive inference plays a more important role in the realization of coherence of English entertainment news because of the particularity of entertainment texts. This finding may shed some light on how English entertainment news is organized and offers a news perspective on the way we store and process language, which is of some relevance to language teaching.
