The Occident introduced an ecological viewpoint into literary criticism in the twentieth-century background of environmental crisis. With the development of ecocriticism, interpreting Ernest Hemingway's writings from an ecological perspective has turned into a trend. There is a realization of Hemingway's contradictory ecological values, but most of the studies are limited to single writing or single point of view. This thesis intends to explore Ernest Hemingway's ecological ambivalence implicated in all his works and the cause thereof. The whole thesis consists of five parts. The introduction part explains the purpose and significance of this thesis and provides the outline. Chapter 2 studies the ambivalence in Hemingway's ecological value on nature. Chapter 3 is devoted to study the ambivalence in Hemingway's ecological value on animals. Chapter 4 and 5 discuss respectively his ecological value on man and woman, white people and colored people. With ecocriticism as the theoretical support, this thesis is to explore Ernest Hemingway's ecological ambivalence implicated in his writings by means of an integrated approach combining interdisciplinary study and textual analysis. Focusing on a specific manifestation of Hemingway's ecological ambivalence and its origins, I expect to gain a better view of Hemingway's attitude toward nature and to achieve a sounder understanding of Hemingway.
