Gaomi Northeast Village in Mo Yan's novels enjoys a high reputation in the literary world. This fictional homeland embodies his hopes and dreams, and it is the life root of Mo Yan, a stranger in foreign lands, the refuge of his soul and his spiritual home. This thesis illustrates Mo Yan's arduous spiritual quest in the construction of his Gaomi Northeast Village.Mo Yan's great literary accomplishment is inseparable from his clinging questing spirit. On account of his unique life experience and cultural edification, Mo Yan has been longing for freedom ever since his childhood. In the process of questing for dreams of freedom and exploring the authentic and ideal existence of life, he forms a complex relationship with his homeland. His emotions toward his homeland go through a process from escaping to returning. His youthful escape as revolt only serves as a way to realize his dreams. However, he cannot get himself integrated into the spiritual "wasteland" of the city, where the sense of alienation produces within this stranger's vagabond soul a tearing pain. Only by way of escaping from the city and returning to his homeland can he cure himself of the spiritual wounds. Whereas as a returner to his homeland, he discovers that his homeland can neither embody his dreams nor console his lacerated soul. Therefore, penetrating the historical curtain, he achieves the redemption of his "rootlessness" through questing for the "clean-bred red sorghum" across the black Inky River, following the forefathers' footprints and recalling their great achievements.Mo Yan's Gaomi Northeast Village is a symbol and a metaphor. In writing her, Mo Yan puts forward his profound reflection of life, existence and hardship, explores the ideal ways of existence of life, and tries to search for the powerful force to reconstruct our national ethos.
