From Disappearing Moon To New Moon

In 1990s post-colonial feminism arises from post colonialism. It combines post colonialism and feminism and believes that the rebellion of gender discrimination should go together with the rebellion of class and racial discrimination. Only by this can females finally get their freedom.Disappearing Moon Cafédescribes the history of the four female generations of the Wong family. This thesis has explored the dynamic change of the psychological state of the four generations from unawareness of the three-fold oppression to awareness and finally the rebellion of the oppression from the perspective of post-colonial feminism. During the rebellion, they have deconstructed the oriental images and the image of Otherμin race, gender and class, and finally found their true identities, which has given enlightenment to the female immigrants.This thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter explores the transition of attitudes towards racial oppression: from being discriminated against to the confusion of their racial identities to final freedom. Through Kae·s tracing back of the immigrants·history and her identification with Chinese culture, she deconstructs the oriental images and reaches cultural hybridity.The second chapter analyzes the different class oppressions of the four generations. Meanwhile, it analyzes the class distinction and border changes among the four generations and explains the reason for this change. In the third and fourth generation, the class distinction has been eliminated through the inter-class friendship, romantic relationship and marriage.The third chapter analyzes the process from gender oppression to gender freedom. It mainly analyzes the roots of gender discrimination: patriarchal system and its main influence on the education, economical rights and other rights of females. Furthermore, females get their freedom through the rebellion of gender discrimination and deconstruction of the male image.When the three-fold repression has been deconstructed, the female immigrants have constructed their new image and found their selfμ.
