A Pragmatic Analysis Of Code Switching In Adaptation Context

Code switching,as a mixed language phenomenon,appears increasingly in our daily life.Since 1970s,research on code switching has been drawn linguists' attention.Different findings from different purposes have been explored.Comparatively speaking,pragmatic approach is more comprehensive to cover the linguistic,social,cultural and psychological elements of code switching.For this reason,a pragmatic approach is adopted in this study to explore the linguistic phenomenon.This thesis,based on Verschueren's theory of adaptation,from a pragmatic angle analyzes the code switching which appears frequently in Chinese mass media,and discusses its types,functions and purposes.Code switching of Chinese / English in mass media coheres with the general principles of code switching which were realized to adaptation of the linguistic reality,social conventions and psychological motivation.Additionally,the exclusive function of code switching in mass media is to attract the attention of public no matter whether they have certain bilingual competence or not in order to fulfill the communicative targets.
