| Language is the most important communication tool for human beings, and it is the main way for people to express. The connections among countries in politics, economy, culture, etc.make language contact frequently and also bring with the change of sociolinguistic form such as pronunciation,syntax,etc.Code-switching(CS for short)is a common phenomenon of language contact, which frequently takes place in people’s daily communication in bilingual or multilingual communities. In recent years, with the economic development and the increasing cultural contacts with western countries,Chinese-English code-switching in people’s daily communication has been widely used. The thesis aims to adopt Yu Guodong’s adaptation model to analyze C-E CS in the the outdoor parent-child reality TV show Where Are We Going,Dad II from the perspective of Linguistic Adaptation, describe the importance of this pragmatic strategy and ultimately explore the communicative functions realized in the process of adaptation. To be specific, the thesis aims to answer the following three questions:1.How many types of code-switching appear in Where Are We Going,Dad II?2.What is the distribution pattern of C-E CS emerging in Where Are We Going,Dad II?3.How does the C-E CS in the outdoor parent-child reality TV show Where Are We Going,Dad II realize the adaptation? Both quantitative and qualitative methods are adopted in the present study to answer the above three research questions, which is based on data analysis. The data sources used in the present study are 16volumes of Where Are We Going,Dad II from June 20th,2014 to October 3rd,2014.Firstly,all the conversations that contain the phenomenon of CS are recognized and are written down, and CS are classified and the occurrence frequency of each kind of CS is calculated;Secondly, the forms of C-E CS are categorized and the occurrence frequency of each form is calculated;Thirdly,C-E CS as realization of adaptation is revealed under the Linguistic Adaptation Theory by analyzing typical conversations. After the data analysis, major findings have been summarized.Firstly,Chinese-English code-switching in Where Are We Going,Dad II is the main switching.Secondly, the switched code includes many components such as words, phrases and sentences while sentences take up the vast majority;finally,code-switching used in the show is regarded as a language choice as well as a kind of pragmatic strategy to achieve their communicative purposes. From the analysis of adaptability of code-switching,the author notices that adapted code-switching can realize many pragmatic functions such as filling lexical gap, filling semantic gap, avoiding taboos, implicit expression, creating humor, seeking fashion, shortening psychological distance, showing off, emphasizing, showing surprise, etc. The findings of the present study have its theoretical and pedagogical implications. The Linguistic Adaptation Theory is adopted as the theoretical framework of the present study, which shows the applicability of the theory to analyze CS;and it is found that the pragmatic functions can help language users to use pragmatic strategies better to achieve the purpose of successful communication. |
