Urban II's Sermon to the First Crusade is a unevadable and inmportant historical material for scholars who research the crusade's history. But as far as Sermon, there exists no exact transcription of Urban II's speech at the Council of Clermont, the five extant versions of the speech were written down quite a bit later according to the people's memory ,and they differ widely from one another. All versions of the speech except that by Fulcher of Chartres were probably influenced by the chronicle account of the First Crusade called the Gesta Francorum (dated c. 1102), whose author also gives a version of the speech. In contrast, his version of Urban's speech was written 1100-1106. Because Fulcher of Chartres was present at the Council, and joined in the First Crusade. At last, Fulcher of Chartres' version has been received wide acceptance by the scholars both abroad and at home. So it was in such a context that the author will spread narrative and analysis to Urban II's sermon from different angles. Meanwhile, the author hope reader can reach a clear understanding of general historical background before the sermon and have the strong feelings about the First Crusade's true motivation.More specifically, the content of this paper includes three major parts:The foreword briefly introduces the present situation of the research in this sphere and the basic problems which will be dealt with in the paper.The central part is made up of five sub-parts. The first part is mainly to narrate the Urban II and his sermon. The second part is to have a the total narration of social context before Urban II delivering his Sermon. The third part is to describe Urban II's Serman in the secular interest, because pope have given an important consideration to that in the sermon. The fourth part is to describe Urban II's sermon in the religious interest. The special religion relation between East and West is introduced and open up to readers religious background of the First Crusade. The last part comes to the final and general conclusion to historic significance of Urban II's Sermon.The conclusion puts an end to the text, providing a multi-dimension analysis and summary, and have a briefly description to the influence of the later Crusades.
