The Inquiry Of The Learned Society Of Wuyue History And Geography

The learned society of Wuyue history and geography , which studied area culture, is the first civil academic institution in China's modern history. When it was established, the learned society had as many as 200 members, most of the participants were famous politicians and scholars. The learned society regarded the research of ancient Wuyue culture as its purpose and regarded the studying of Jiangzhe ancient archaeology and the dissemination of Wuyue culture as its responsibility. During several years, the association carried out detecting and found many Yiwen pottery sides and Neolithic sites in Jiangsu province, shanghai city and zhejiang province. All this discoveries had not only clarified the basic characteristics of Wuyue culture-based , but also moved Wuyue history forward for thousands of years. The prehistoric archaeological activity is the beginning of southern archaeological research, Stone and pottery sites which were found, filled the gaps in the southern archaeological activity. In the first time, the learned society took on national research and found out the origin of Wuyue, ethnic character, the direction and route of movement. The learned society also explored the spread of culture through The Yin moving to north and The Yue to south. By moving, Wuyue culture was spread to the Yellow river basin and Southeast Asia. So we can affirm the culture status of Wuyue in early Chinese civilization and the impact aboard. And also, the learned society is the first institution using new methods in studying civil area culture. On the development of Wu culture and Baiyue culture, there are mountains of reactive power. However, due to long-term ignored of Jiangnan archaeology, the learned society was also cold-shouldered by the academic. The research would gradually be destroyed and the historical data also was not significant. This paper attempts to collect from the learned society the reports of archaeology, research papers and books, to reproduce the contents of it's activities, reveal the results of their research, scholarship and social affection. What I want to do is to give it an appropriate position of the academic status in modern history. This article is divided into three chapters. Chapter I includes the setting up and the operating mechanism of the learned society. This chapter not only describes the setting up of the learned society and its branches, the causes of setting up and research purposes, but also analyzes the operating mechanism and introduces the methods of members 'coming from and source of income.Chapterâ…¡introduces research activities and numbers' discussions. This chapter deals with the archaeological excavations, surveys, publicity, publishing and materials collecting and also analyzes the research discussion of the members.Chapterâ…¢presents the achievements of history and impact at home and aboard. In the archaeology, the research on the Neolithic culture, Yinwen pottery culture and black pottery culture reveals the Wuyue-based culture. The learned society also analyzes the origin of Wuyue nation, customs, migrations and the spread of wuyue culture. This chapter will also introduce the statistical methods of history and theories of totem. Using history records and archaeological matters, we can analyze the association's contribution of archaeology, ethnic origin and the beginning of civilization. Since the research was ignored at home, it didn't have much more influence. But it led a great craze on collecting Wuyue historical materials and research in Japan.
