A Research On The Differences Of "Yao" Construction In Different Styles

This thesis primarily refers to the research productions of modal verb "yao" in linguistics at home and abroad and applies the stylistic theories. It adopts the methods of quantitative research and qualitative research, surveys the differences of "yao" construction with the basic sentence pattern "(NP) + modal verb 'yao' + VP" in the political comment style and artistic style, then explains the differences in terms of the style.This thesis consists of 6 chapters.Chapter 1:Introduction. It mainly introduces the reasons, object, significance, background, thread, method of this research and the scope of the corpus.Chapter 2 summarizes the up-to-date studies of modal verb "yao", such as its modality and modality interpretation, in order to carry out the following research well.Chapter 3 analyzes the differences of the whole "yao" construction in the political comment style and artistic style in terms of its occurrence frequency, sentence pattern and sentence type.Chapter 4 analyzes the differences of the 3 main parts of "yao" construction, which are the modal verb "yao", the NP before "yao" and the VP following "yao" in the political comment style and artistic style.Chapter 5 focuses on the causes of the above differences. Stylistically speaking, the differences come from the restriction of the style, such as the different contextual types, expression functions, stylistic thinking and stylistic information of the political comment style and artistic style.Chapter 6 comes to the conclusion. It summarizes the main ideas of this thesis and its deficiencies.
