Translator's Subjectivity And Chao Yuan-ren's Chinese Translation Of Alice's Adventures In Wonderland

In the 1990s,Translation Studies finally came into its own and interest in the field has never been stronger and the study of translation is taking place alongside an increase in its practice all over the world.The identity and status of the translator is arousing more and more attention of translation scholars.With the "cultural turn" in the translation studies,the subjectivity of translator began to be investigated from different perspectives.This thesis first deals with the definition of translator's subjectivity and its necessity for translation.Then Chao Yuen-ren's Chinese Version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is studied from the perspective of.translator's subjectivity.The main reason why Chao' version could stand the test of time and become an enduring classic work is Chao's necessary and appropriate exertion of subjectivity.The author tries to explore how the translator achieved an effect in the target text similar or equivalent to that in the source one from the dimensions of style,rhetoric devices,and culturally loaded items.Chao' version is popular with young readers for its legibility and vividness.The narrative of the whole story(including dozens of poems) is translated in modern vernacular Chinese,and some colloquial expressions of Peking dialect are used for the purpose of enlivening the conversational language of characters.The "untranslatable" wordplays,puns,and parodies in the original are translated in a creative way.With such translation skills as substitution and amplification,Chao succeeded in empathizing Chinese readers with maximally equivalent interest and feelings that westerners can perceive when reading the original story.With regard to the culturally-loaded words and phrases in the original text,which are unfamiliar or inaccessible to Chinese readers,Chao rewrote them with more understandable and acceptable Chinese counterparts to bridge the cultural gap between two cultures. By analyzing the Chao's version,we can know that translation process is not simply one of language transfer but a creative one affected by the translator's subjectivity.Since the translator,the subject of the translation activity,is independent of the object-the original text,it is indispensable for the translator to employ his own potential,dynamics and creativity when doing a translation.Therefore,the study on translator's subjectivity is very important for better understanding the essence of translation,and it will provide a new revelation for deepening the knowledge of the whole translation process,a better description and explanation of expected or unexpected phenomena in translation.
