The Research On "Self" Image In Novalis's Works

This article attempts to analyze German Romantic poet Novalis' "self image" of his Poetics under the ideological context of the 18th century."Self" and "subject" are important concepts in the transition of Modern epistemology.In the late 18th century,the early German Romantic poetry has inherited subjective theory from Descartes,Kant,Fichte poetics,and make it as their core proposition of romantic theory.As the Schlegel and Fichte's student,Novalis poetics also advocated the concept of "self" to build his system of poetics,and display "self" image in his works.According to the multiple identity of Novalis,the philosopher,poet and the identity of the Enlightenment,we must realize that the "self" image is not only the idea and writing poetry object, but also refers to the life experience of the writer in the constructive process.Therefore,the paper analyzes "self" of Novalis by two ways.First,I want to analyze the meaning and the role of "self" in Novalis poetics theory.Second,the paper displays the extension of "self" image by text analysis which combines the Novalis's life experience and poetry.The first part concentrates on the source and background of"self",in order to explain that the Novalis's self-image concept has derived from the ambiguities of "self" in the pre-Romanticism poetry.In modern philosophy,the emotional self has been hidden under the rational self.In eighteenth-century,the German thinkers such as Herder,Hamann,Fichte,Schlegel turned on process of Romanticism to review the neo-classical poetry.As the successor of Fichte,Novalis accepted the meaning of "self" of the German thinkers,and took it to build his poetics theory by the way of intuitive experience but not the way of the Philosophical thought.The second part of paper wants to analyze the several levels of self-image.Section I analyzes the geres which include the lyric versicle,the fragment and the fiction.The geres play the priori role in the construction of self-image.The using of geres is better to express the internal experience,ideas and the poetics.Sectionâ…¡explains the depth of the "self" image from the perspective of experience,and analyzes the relationship between the "natural" and poetry,the metaphor of images, the meaning of love and belief under the concept of "self".Finally,the paper points that the purpose of the concept of "self" in Novalis poetics not only stays in the heart of the individual,but also plays a role in the social enlightenment.The goal of "self" in Novalis poetics is to build a society in which every individual has the maximize free.
