Mo Yan, a contemporary Chinese writer with distinctive personal characteristics in his writings, is a man not short of controversies. His three most famous historical novels, Plump Breasts and Round Hips, Sandalwood Punishment, and Life and Death Fatigue, have won him tremendous acclaim. However, these novels are not free from defects when read meticulously. In terms of the content, firstly, as far as the depth is concerned, these novels share an inclination of romanticizing the war, stereotyping the human sufferings, and vatality-deviated .Secondly, on the whole, the spiritual homestead on which the author depends on in his works is vulnerable. While depicting the history, he is so lost in his own subjective imagination that he reveals too much of ugliness and brutality, thus ignoring the humanity of his characters. In terms of artistic representation, traces of immitation can be easily identified in the structure of the three novels. The works sharing restrained and recurring themes and the characterization appears false and fussy. In addition, the language of the works manifest excessive extravagance and certain distortion. From the perspective of art innovation, they all expose a trend of stereotyping, which is specifically embodied in the modeling of the characters, the magic narration and the sensory description . What mentioned above might illustrate that the author's efforts on recreativity are not enough. This article concludes that these defects are inseparable with the authors own experiences as well as the impact of the external environment. Looking from the entire Chinese literary circle, this article finds that the defects founding Mo Yan's works are no individual cases; they are part of a general phenomenon.
