Based on the post-colonial theory, this thesis intends to explore the process of pursuing hybridized cultural identity in The Love Wife, the representative work of new generation Chinese-American female writer,Gish Jen.Representing different cultural identities, the family members of Wong's family undergo the process of being "othered" at the beginning but finally succeed in pursuing the hybridized cultural identity.Gish Jen successfully depicts the Wong's family as the "third space" that provides the chance for the family members to negotiate their cultural identities. She also expresses the wish that America will become the "third space" that can provide a place for people from different cultural backgrounds.Nowadays,it is not only the colored people who are considered as the "other" in America;the WASP are also the "other" in the eyes of the colored people. Both of them have to hybridize their cultural identities in the "third space"—a space for the opposite sides to pursue a hybridized new identity.
