A Study On The Meaning Types, Triggers Of Modern Chinese Presupposition And Their Corresponding Relationship

On the basis of all the research achievements already reached,this thesis attempts to redefine presupposition and make a probe into the mearting types of presupposition,triggers of the presupposition in modern Chinese language and their corresponding relationship.First of all,on the premise of the meanings,this thesis classifies presupposition into three types:the existence presupposition,the event presupposition,and the belief presupposition, and makes a further analysis with conversational examples.Then,from the angle of syntactic pattern,the triggers of presupposition(words,structures and sentence patterns) are reclassified into three groups fourteen types:words(including noun,verb,adverbs, conjunctions,ordinal numeral,particle,mood word),structures(including finite structure, comparative structure,predicate-complement structure,preposition-object structure) and sentence patterns(including clause,interrogative and imperative sentence).In the end,a probe into the corresponding relationship between the meaning types and the presupposition triggers is processed and four results have been withdrawn,which are:(1) The trigger of existence presupposition is limited to noun;other ingredients that could trigger existence presupposition could be traced back to its property as noun.(2) The fact presupposition,which is a type of the event presupposition,could be triggered by many words,structures and sentence patterns; This suggests that this kind of presupposition is commonly used.(3) Triggers which have the property of verbs could and only could trigger event presuppositions.This is a very strict rule. (4) Adverb could trigger more presuppositions than others.And its major function is to trigger belief presupposition.All types of belief presupposition could be triggered by adverb.
