The Study On The Process And The Trend Of Presupposition

Presupposition has an important effect on the studies of meaning. Ever since theEarly analytic philosopher Frege first clarified the logic phenomenons in the word of"presupposition" in1892's on sense and reference, presupposition has begun anddevelopped rapidly. The article divides it into three stages and names logic presupposition,semantic presupposition and pragmatic presupposition. During the time, the study has gotgreat achievements, and the pragmatic research of presupposition deals with the dynamismof presupposition proposition in the complicated context, and presupposition is either thesubset of common ground of the conversation or belongs to the speaker's belief in it, thecommon ground theory of presupposition is prevailing; Whether it has been finished thatthe studies of the theories of presupposition, how it has developped and where it would goto. The aim of the Paper is to reveal the course and the trend of its development.The article is based on the studies of the scholars at home and abroad about thepresupposition. Firstly, it sorts out the process of the development of the presuppositiontheories in three stages; secondly, it compares and analyses the different views referred ineach stage; lastly, it comes to that the trend of the development of presupposition is toclarify its dynamism from a new perspective of pragmatic presupposition.The studies in presupposition can be divided into three stages. First, logicpresupposition, whose core is the thinking of logic truth value, puts forward the problemsthat the classical two-valued logic can't solve out; Second, semantic presupposition, itstresses the expression that the sentences' semantic analysis on the presupposition, but italso reveal the the defects and deficiencies of the presupposition in semantics on the studyto presupposition triggers, presupposition projection and presupposition adjustment and soon; Third, pragmatic presupposition, it regards presupposition as a kind of pragmaticphenomenon and combines the contextual factors to study the dynamism of thepresupposition, but the common pragmatic presupposition has not still solved thechallenge that the complicated context brought to the presupposition adjustment. Last, itmakes a forecast to the trend of the presupposition's development.
