Rhetorical Illusion Of Utopian |  | Posted on:2010-09-24 | Degree:Master | Type:Thesis |  | Country:China | Candidate:S X Lei | Full Text:PDF |  | GTID:2155360275956366 | Subject:Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literature |  | Abstract/Summary: |  PDF Full Text Request |  | Gefei is one of the representatives of avant-garde writers,at present the studies about his novels more emphasize on "narrative" side,very few people examine the epistemological background behind the form innovation from the epistemology, ontology angles.In my opinion,"narrative","fiction" and "the sense of unreality", "dream" and other elements are not only concerned about the objects of Gefei,but also his way of understanding the world.Some researchers believe that the early narrative adventure of Gefei only expressed the points of view of" ontology of narrative " that the novel is the narrative and the fictional rather than anything else.The points of view may be only highlight the special narrative features of Gefei's novels and are reasonable,but their theoretical presupposition is the binary division of content/ format(content than form)and neglect the dialectic relationship between content and form of works,narrowing the scope of interpretation and the dimension of spirit of Gefei's novels,and reducing them to the innovation of technology in the field of form, therefore,the significance of Gefei's novels has been widely regarded only as the revolution of narrative(that is,the revolution of form).In my opinion,Gefei'novels question the reality of the world,therefore,show extreme consciousness of the narrative,express the unreality,absurdity,and break of this world(of course,as well as the novel) and the existence itself.The strategy of form is an essential part of the expression of content,"Only in this way can we express this content,If we have new content,it is necessary to create new forms"(Zhu Guangqian says).For example,the maze and break of narrative precisely illustrates the maze experience and non-continuity of reality,obscure and incomprehensible style,open topic precisely illustrates the mysterious and incomprehensible reality and the helpless sense of people themselves.In the comments of Joyce's "Ulysses",T.S.Eliot said that the modernist novel experiments have been able to rise,because the traditional literary models are always assumed that a relatively continuous and stable social order,it is difficult to convey "contemporary history that immense futility,chaos picture"(Abrams," Literature Glossary of Terms",P167).The researchers who claim that Gefei's narrative adventure is "more like a technological revolution,rather than revolutionary thought" (YinChanglong:"1985:an extension with the turning point",P164) only notice the changes in narrative form,but neglect the changes of the unique survival experience and thought background of modern people behind the form revolution.Because of the vivid interpretation of Chen Xiaoming,"labyrinth" and "vacancy" has became the distinctive emblems of Gefei'novels.That Chen Xiaoming uses Derrida's deconstruction theory to interpret Gefei's works is groundbreaking and has extraordinary significance.Later,many researchers of Gefei's works have followed this line of thought.However,the potential premise of his interpretion has not been divorced from the framework of Borges's works,because "vacancy" and "Labyrinth" are the typical characteristics of Borges's novels.These two points can accurately and conveniently be used to describe the characteristics of Gefei's novels, but too generally,thus Gefei's novels have always been in the shadow of Borges.No doubt that the Gefei's novels are influenced by Borges,but its uniqueness is quite obvious.For example,Borges's novels are Gnostic mysticism-style,and the mysticism of Gefei's novels obviously has the characteristic of the theory of confucianist divination.In addition,the current studies about Gefei's novels mostly disperse in the studies monographs of avant-garde novels.As a literature trend,Avant-garde novels' cultural metaphor and aesthetic landscape are obviously common.However,the research of a genre often emphasizes on their commonalities,and the research about their personality is relatively weak.When they talk about the novel revolution,people always emphasize their novel poetics problem and aesthetic characteristics in a full name and the plural tone,as if those writers have a promise before."This whole perspective concept has shielded the fundamental differences among individuals and the individual's interior,blocked people's sensitiveness to historical details and 'incidental'"(ZhangTaozhou,"The poetry space of modern chinese",P196).The interpretion about Gefei's novels often emerge as a specific example of a macro theory. Ironically,the fact is that Gefei tries to deconstruct the overall concept and always stress historical details and "incidental".In fact,from the misunderstanding of "ontology of narrative" to the shield of individual characteristics of writer,a meaningful tension relationship exists between the studies about Gefei and Gefei's novels.Many Gefei's novels expresse the concept that the ideographic functions of language is untrustworthy(for example,in "QingHuang"),so in a way,these misreading itself constitutes a vivid interpretion of Gefei's novels.Therefore,this article tries to eliminate the fog of "ontology of narrative",so that the works'form can get rid of oppression of the content,meanwhile,opposes the one-sided view that Gefei's works only is a narrative technological innovation, combines completely rhetorical devices and content expression to interpret Gefei's novels,discusses the changes of cognitive style and thinking ways behind the evolution of the novel form.This article consists of two chapters.The first chapter mainly discusses the rhetorical devices of Gefei's novels, especially notices the ideology behind of rhetorical of Gefei's novels.Section I starts from rhetoric devices of Gefei's novels to study how Gefei's views about the world dominate his novel concepts and his exploration of novel form,as well as his recognition and mistrust of the language.Clearly these concepts of Gefei were impacted the 20th century Western philosophy of language.This philosophy emphasize language,therefore,everything became erratic,the world shows nature of illusory. Sectionâ…¡combs the cultural sources of mysterious atmosphere of Gefei's novels systematically,therefore,it gets rid of the shadow of Borges,shows a unique personal aesthetic characteristic.The mysticism of Gefei's novel has two main sources:Firstly, Chinese original religion(witchcraft) in the legacy of civil society,which is the cultural atmosphere of local superstitions of pre-industrial era,related to the theory of confucianist divination;Secondly,the impact of such trends as Western irrationalism, mysticism,skepticism,fatalism.These two cultural atmosphere were closely combined together.Sectionâ…¢analyzes the models of dream in Gefei's works,discusses Gefei's fundamental views about the world:the unreality of the world,the confusion of dreams and reality.Both the rhetorical features and content of Gefei's novels express Gefei's personal feelings about the unreality of the world,meanwhile,convey his extreme view of skepticism that similars rationalism.Chapterâ…¡discusses the content of Gefei's novels.Sectionâ… discusses the decadent consciousness and critical spirit in Gefei's novels.Here,"decadent" is not only the exposure to a variety of defects of society,but also the lament to the desolation and the tragic sense of life itself as a existentialist.Sectionâ…¡discusses the symbolic meaning of "father" in Gefei's novels.Gefei has repeatedly written the recession of "father" and the strong of "mother".The recession of "father" are metaphorical expression of Christmas disintegration and culture out of control which expresses Gefei's mistrust to cultural traditions and accumulated history. Metaphorically in sociology,it can be looked as the resistance and transgression of a depressed subsidiary against tradition,authority,order and patriarchal culture.At the same time,the recession of "father" means the failure of a utopian ideal,as well as disappointment of a generation of people about this failure.Sectionâ…¢discusses the Gefei's view about history.The basic attitude about history of Gefei's is that the history of ontological sense doesnot exist,only different historical narrative exist.He once said:History "is nothing but a pile of debris of memories." The revolutionary history is the same.The stories about Revolution history have revised and rewritten in contemporary novels,"the revolutionary history" has also been rewritten constantly.
