The research of Goethe is always an important task of the history of European literature. The research involves dramatis personae, subject matter, aesthetic perception and poetic notion while Gothe's idea of liberty has been igored and snubbed because in Gothe's era, politic liberty was widely pursued while Gothe had been getting into explore humanbeing's moral liberty.Not untill the eruption of the World Wars did the attitude of the western critic field change. The enmity among nations, racism and many other issues gradually revealed the importance of building moral liberty. People started to realize that a country with real freedom should not only free own constitution system but also cultivate citizens of free spirits.The first chapter of this thesis gives a presentation about the idea of liberty of the age of enlightenment in order to educe the undeniable great charm of Goethe to our empty and blundering age. Goethe is a litterateur basing himself upon the angle of anthropology to concern about humanbeing's moral liberty construction. The next three chapters are set to dissertate his idea's process of the budding, development and then finally being mature. In Chapter Two, it is presented that Goethe's idea was started when in his youth he found in Shakespeare'works the conflict between pursuing personal liberty and necessary entirety development. And it was established when he read and learned Ethica Ordine Geometrico Demonstrata of Baruch Spinoza. The third chapter probes into Goethe's social practice holding his idea of liberty which profited from Spinoza. Goethe experienced the meaning of liberty of life and was deeply cognizant of the importance of kindness, the foundation of human nature, in pursuing political liberty. He also realized that real liberty is continuously conquering demoniac lure and making moral efforts in order to figure selfhood as well as possible. What has been mentioned above was the very theme of Goethe's metaphase works. During his late years, with continuously disquisitions about the nature, Goethe estabished a deeper and wider cognition of humanbeing and its moral libery. Origine and principle became very important elements of his idea of liberty. During this era, his works adequately revealed that liberty stands when a genius mediates it with rules with his own power. Thereout, he summarized that"none is of freedom or of life deserving unless he daily exploits it anew."...
