Lessing's The Golden Notebook ranks as one of last century's most important feminism works. It is difficult to find another feminist novel among its contemporaries as rich and comprehensive dealing with women's lives as The Golden Notebook. The significance of this work is that it presents an epic of female experience. In The Golden Notebook, Lessing examined the western free women rationally when she tried to highlight all difficulties they encountered on the way to self-liberation. Her description of free women went far beyond the contemporary feminist novels since she began to analyze their survival dilemma with a broadened prospect. Above all, the profundity of The Golden Notebook lies in the distinct way out she found for the wakening of the free women.Through analyzing the dilemma the western free women encountered in The Golden Notebook and illustrating the way out they had found , this paper then provides the modern women with a way out for reference on their way to self-liberation . It falls into four parts. The first is an introduction which talks about the background, covering a general review of The Golden Notebook and the debate triggered by it. The second , or the chapter I focuses on the difficulties the western free women encountered . In this part the first section gives a detailed description about their dilemma they experienced in various situations, including the collapse of their writer dreams, political ideals, love desires, while the second section demonstrates a further analysis about how they finally fell from the state of dilemma into a complete collapse. The third ,or the chapter II, is a thorough analysis about how Lessing found a way out for them, why it is such a compromising way instead of some other ways , what its four distinctive features are and in the end points out its meaning . The last part is the conclusion.
