"Freedom" is an important theme in Lessing's creation. It is also an important concept repeatedly discussed in The Golden Notebook. The core story of the novel was named as "Free Women" by Lessing.Anna and Molly, who are self-proclaimed as free women, although they have achieved the independent and free lifestyle of modern women, their mental state is still in difficulty.Tracing its roots, the hurried pace that pursuing the freedom, among modern women, actually reflected the overall disorder of society at that time.Lessing started the essay from the description of the female in the 20 th century, displaying an overview of society and a greater risk of survival that individuals encountered in the process of self-construction.This article starts from the unique artistic form of the novel. It explores the spiritual connotation of the novel through the interpretation of the narrative space, narrative strategy and text structure, and investigates the relationship between form and content. The article includes four chapters. The first chapter expounds the writing significances and goals, which is the basis of the article. The second chapter focuses on the complicated structure of The Golden Notebook. It uses the perspective of metafiction to understand the dual juxtaposition structure and plot settings of the text.In this paper, the outer structure(five notes)and the inner structure(Free Women)are interpreted separately to explore the way of integrating women's difficult living situations into structural forms, which makes a structure of the novel become an effective way to express "dilemmas." The third chapter addresses the changing narrative strategies of the "Golden Notebook".These narrative techniques have a strong implication on expressing the encounters of female individuals.Through an in-depth analysis of them,we discuss the fragmentation and reconstruction of women's freedom. The fourth chapter analyzes the narrative space highlighted in The Golden Notebook. It concludes that different spaces represent the psychological state of free women in different periods and the need of spaces for women to achieve spiritual breakthrough.Based on the clues of "free women's dilemma",this article intends to analyze how Lessing's modern women achieved true freedom.Lessing has in a more open view of the predicament of women.Individuals must integrate freedom into society and keep the pace of the times.
