Gunga Din Highway: Construction Of Ethics And Perplexities

Frank chin is a controversial writer in Chinese American literary history.On the one hand,he pioneered the study of Chinese American literature,and has a basic role on the development of Chinese American literary,so he was called "Father of Chinese American Literature." On the other hand,because of his harsh language,radical opinion,he was also seen as "the ayatollah of Asian America." But in any case,Chin has got tremendous achievements in literary criticism,dramas and novels writing.He takes an important part in the history of Chinese America literary.In this paper,I take his novel Ganga Din highway as the research object,and combine with the post-colonial theory and literary criticism ethics theory to reread the novel.In my opinion,Chin expressed deep ethical feelings in this novel.In the novel,he tried to set up a piece of ethical orders in Chinese American society,and help them to get citizenships in American society.To the writer,the male Chinese American was the principal part of the construction of ethical orders in Chinese American society.At the same time,Chin considered that if they wanted to set up the ethical orders,they should have the independent spirit to bravely refuse to be assimilated and have the heroism to resist to be prejudiced by the mainstream society.In order to reveal his ethical feelings, Chin also used concentrative time and spatial narratology and polemic and bantering article styles in the novel.However,I found that the author showed the following aspects of the contradictions and perplexities on the process of constructing the ethical orders.First,when he constructed the Chinese American societal ethical orders,he deconstructed American societal inherent ethical orders,and this deconstruction sometimes were intrinsic to humanity ethical orders.At the same time,he was unconscious fall into the system of mainstream societal "internal colonization" system.He often used mainstream societal system to oppose the mainstream society.In addition,Chin also appeared the cultural identity confusion on the process of constructing ethical orders.
