Second language acquisition(SLA) is strongly influenced by the learner's first language(L1) and the role of the L1 in SLA is mostly negative. That is,the L1 gets in the way or interferes with the learning of the second language(L2).In fact.the process of SLA is often characterized by overcoming the influence of L1.Most scholars believe that differences between the first and second languages create learning difficulty which results in errors in phonetics, grammar, syntax, etc.By the analysis about the learner's native language with the target language, differences can be identified and be used to predict areas of potential errors.By this means, the learner can overcome the negative transfer of first language during classroom practice.Shandong dialect as the first language of English learners coming from Shandong province has a lot of characteristics. It has some similarities as well as differences with English consonants in the aspect of phonetics. The different phonetic features also exist in sub-branches of Shandong province, for example,in east and west areas of Shandong province.By the major use of contrastive analysis method, this paper will describe the consonantal phonemes in east area dialects of Shandong province, study its special phonetic phenomena and make a comparison between the two language systems,i.e. dialects in east area of Shandong province and English consonantal phonemes. The purpose of this paper is the following:firstly, accurately find out the characteristics of dialects of the consonant system in east area of Shandong province and briefly illustrate the features of English consonant system;secondly, carefully compare the differences of these two consonant systems in respect of phonetic phonemes and study the influence of EFL learners' first language on the acquisition of English consonantal phonemes;thirdly, mainly find the countermeasures of overcoming negative transfer and give useful suggestions to English teachers and students for teaching and learning English speech sounds well.
