Nonverbal communication is an integral part of human communication. However, it has been neglected for a long time in the foreign language teaching and learning. Because of a lack of the cultural knowledge of nonverbal communication, foreign language learners are prone to make cultural mistakes during cross-cultural communication, and this may lead to communication failures. It is significant for foreign language learners to improve their abilities of cross-cultural communication by learning the knowledge of nonverbal communication. As the most important tool for learners, ECLDs provide not only the definitions, but also colorful linguistic and cultural knowledge. But from the cross-cultural perspective, nonverbal communication expressions (NVCEs) are not been treated equally as verbal communication expressions in these dictionaries. It is apparent that the information of NVCEs isn't satisfactory to learners. The author carries out a survey on the presentation methods of representative NVCEs in ECLDs.The thesis introduces the importance of nonverbal communication in EFL teaching and learning, and then gives a general description of the studies and development of it in different academic areas. Next, a comparison of the cultural differences of NVCEs in English and Chinese is made. Moreover, we make an investigation into the presentation methods of these NVCEs in ECLDs, finding out their respective advantages and disadvantages. Finally, a series of samples are proposed to explain how to present NVCEs in ECLDs.
