A Study On The Compensation In Humor Translation From The Perspective Of Reception Aesthetics

In translation process,loss of information is unavoidable.Thus translation compensation is an indispensable component of translation studies.However, translation compensation study has long been overlooked by translation scholars, which is incompatible with its importance in translating.Thus more attention needs to be paid to translation compensation study.And this paper mainly focuses on the issue of compensation particularly in humor translation.Compared with the texts which express their meanings directly,humorous texts experience rather more serious loss in translation.Most scholars ever studied humor translation from the perspectives of relevance theory,functionalist translation theory,pragmatics,etc,but few from the perspective of aesthetics of reception.In addition,few of them ever paid enough attention to the issue of compensation.Therefore,the author wants to have a try.Reception aesthetics,a theory of literary criticism with unprecedented emphasis on reader's dynamic role,plays an active role in helping translators choose appropriate translation methods and improving the acceptability of target texts.Apart from language transformation,the key of humor translation is to entertain the readers.Thus humor translation compensation is reader-oriented.So the author has adequate reasons to introduce the aesthetics of reception into the study of humor translation compensation.The thesis tries to analyze the humor translation in the English version of Fortress Besieged in terms of horizon of expectations,indeterminacy and reader's response.Through descriptive research,the author wants to propose a reception-aesthetic approach to the compensation translation of humor,which is composed of the following three steps:first,decide the compensation types according to text analysis;second,choose appropriate compensation methods according to readers' horizon of expectations so as to fill out the indeterminacies of the original text meaning;third,evaluate the quality of translation according to the optimal humorous effect received by readers.Finally,the author concludes that reception aesthetics can do much good to humor translation compensation, making the translator with clearer purpose and making the translation with higher acceptability.This research,to some extent,intends to offer some guidance to humor translation practice as well as make people pay more attention to translation compensation study.
