In 2007,the British female writer Doris Lessing who had been nominated as the Nobel Literature Prize winner for several times won this prize when she was 87.When the news was spread, the literary critics had different point of view on this. Some thought Lessing deserved this prize while the others didn't.I think it is very necessary to study on Doris Lessing and her works seriously and carefully, because Lessing is a controversial writer, and the oldest Nobel Prize winner at the same time.Through the study,I hope we can give an objective evaluation of Lessing so that we can contribute to the research on Lessing.Doris Lessing has written more than 70 works. Many of them are novels, the others are operas, poems, biographies and prose. After reading a lot of her works,I think Lessing's works conclude many themes which can be divided into different styles,so we can make a research from any aspect.I found there is a common point in all her works, and that is the Humanitarian Spirit. Therefore,I analyzed some representative works in every stages of her life, such as The Grass is Singing,The Golden Notebook,Children of Violence and Love, Again. At the same time,I introduced Lessing's life experience in details and pointed out the different environment(Africa and London) influenced her growth and her writing.Besides that,I analyzed the characteristics of the Humanitarian Spirit in Lessing's novels and the facts which made her become a humanitarian writer. It is worth noting that Lessing is not only a humanitarian writer, but also a questioned and critical person in this times and society. She looks deep into the society and attacks all unreasonable and unharmonious phenomenon. Thus, I focused on analyzing her attitude to the social problems. The structure of this paper is here. Chapter One:The introduction of Doris Lessing and the generalization of her works.Chapter Two:The Humanitarian Spirit which is a main line in Doris Lessing's novels.Chapter Three: The facts which made Doris Lessing become a humanitarian writer and the characteristics of the Humanitarian Spirit.Because there is few research on Doris Lessing at home,I have read not only many translated books and papers, but also a lot of English version books and papers. These help me collect the primary materials so that I can enrich this paper and make it more believable.
