It carried out a comprehensive study on the Gods, human kings, spirit kings and religion leaders in"Journey to the West", especially on three aspects: types, image characteristics, the reasons shaping the images, in order to research the author's intention for shaping them.The full paper is divided into six chapters:Form the first chapter to the fourth chapter , I made a classified research on the Gods, the human kings, spirit kings and the religion leaders in Journey to the West, on their types and image characteristics. After a whole research, we can perceive the author's attitude to the"kings"is more cons than pros.In the fifth chapter, I made a research on the reasons that shaping the"king"images. Mainly from the type and theme of the novel itself, ethos of the day and status of the society to discuss the reasons how to create the"king"images. Then, I got a conclusion that the social trend of thought of advocating appetence from leftist of Wang Yangming's theory and the chaotic social conditions, are also the important influence of"king"images'features of the novel.In the last chapter, I made a research on the author's writing purpose. through the exploration of various kings' conduct and deeds with the evidence of a good amount of historical facts, I draw the following conclusion: that the author's writing purpose is to describe the real society of his time and express his emotion and large ambition by the portrait of various kings.After researching the four types of"kings", combined with the novel's type, subject matter, the prevailing social thought and social status, we can see that the author is to use the images of the"kings"to show us a real society of the Ming Dynasty, with so many nasty phenomenon——fatuous despot, rotten governance, murk society with injustice, local bully; at the same time, through creating the image of Monkey King, the author also showed us his strong ill feeling for the dark society and reflected his good wishes for justice society reconstruction.Research the"king"images in Journey to the West, possesses important academic value, historic value and practical value. It is helpful to the readers to grasp the ideological connotation of the novel, grasp the author's creative tendencies and understand those periods of the author's; besides, it provides positive reference to our present society.
