The popularity of the Internet has provided a more fast and convenient way for people's communication and IRC is one of these widespread means. People's state of anonymity in IRC determines the online social relationship has changed a lot for it is difficult to specify participants'real age, sex, profession and social status etc.. Since people are relatively equal in IRC, they are not constrained by so many social norms in talks as they are in the real life which results in the change of IRC language as a language variety. Moreover, the characteristics of IRC like casualness and quickness also contributes to the IRC language changes. The thesis is going to look into the variety of language from the perspective of pragmatics. I conduct a detailed comprehensive study of IRC from the three approaches, and look into the features (structures), principles and social motivations of this special kind of communication by analyzing 19 conversations downloaded randomly from popular Chinese IRC: Sina and QQ. After analyzing the adaptability of the Politeness Principle, Cooperative Principle and their relevant maxims, I come up with the main causes of the flout of the pragmatic principles in Chinese IRC and make some modifications to the related maxims'adaptability order.
