Based on the former studies, this thesis starts with the origin of the conjunction"Bieshuo"and makes a research on the compound sentence of progression led by it from three perspectives: syntactical analysis, semantic characters, and pragmatic functions.Analyses have found that the conjunction"Bieshuo2"originated from the verb phrase"Bieshuo1"through decategorization and subjectivisation. They co-exist with the discourse tag"Bieshuo3"in modern Chinese. Only the conjunction"Bieshuo"leads compound sentences of progression. In the compound sentences of progression led by"Bieshuo", which is of high frequency of occurrences, the conjunction"bieshuo"often appears in the former sentence, mainly followed by words and phrases. This thesis then studies the deep meaning of this pattern, and it is found that the basic proceedings A and the further proceedings B show semantic coherence in two aspects, the basic point C and the further point X and their descriptions. The coherence have different representations in syntactic. The semantic differences between the basic proceedings A and the further proceedings B are classified.0n the basis of the syntactic and semantic analyses, we do further research on the pragmatic functions of the pattern. It is believed that pragmatic stratification exists between the basic point C and the further point X, which could constitute a pair of opposite focuses. In the term of manner and tone, the speakers tend to depreciate or appreciate the subject following"Bieshuo".
