In this paper, we take a complicated language unit "Bie Shuo" as the research object.The language material is retrieved from Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU. We study the grammer nature and the pragmatic functions of" Bie Shuo " from the perspective of syntax, semantic and pragmatic, by adopting the combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis methods. So far, the academic study of "Bie Shuo" gives priority to its branch type research. A comprehensive study of "Bie Shuo" has not found yet.The significance of this paper is to figure out the grammaticalization process, semantic and pragmatic functions and evolvement of "Bie Shuo" comprehensively and systematically. We hope that this paper can help the Chinese learners and users understand and use the language unit in a better way.This paper includes three parts. The main body consists of three chapters.The introduction introduces the reasons why did we choose this topic and summarizes the predecessors’research results and introduces the content of the paper; research methods and corpus sources.The first chapter is to determine the nature of "Bie Shuo".We think that "Bie Shuo "can be characterized as the verb phrase, the conjunction, the discourse marker. Section II studys "Bie Shuo" in a historical way.The conclusion is that the conjunction "Bie Shuo" and the discourse marker "Bie Shuo" are developments of the verb phrase "Bie Shuo" in two different paths.The second chapter examines the syntactic features of the conjunction "Bie Shuo"."Bie Shuo"often appears in the first clause of the complex sentence and often be associated with other conjunctions. In Section II, we take the representative of the complex unit "Bie Shuo",which is" Bie Shuo A B, jiu lian C ye D "as the study object. We study the semantic features of it and we have a conclusion that the items A and C must belong to the same semantic field and at the same time they should have a difference in amount. The items B, D also must belong to the same semantic category.The third chapter examines the discourse marker "Bie Shuo". The first section examines the syntactic features of discourse marker "Bie Shuo". It has multiple language variants; it can appear in the beginning or the middle of a sentence; it can connect a variety of sentence categories freely. In section II, we analysis the pragmatic functions of discourse markers " Bie Shuo ".The conclusion is a summary of the paper,including the flaws and the insufficiencies.
