Looking back into the modern history of the world, we could sense a predominant characteristic in American politics—that is the coexistence of the autarchy and democracy. American government is unsparing of its democracy toward its own people, as the implementation of the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence has already made America the example of democracy all around the world; while toward the"outsiders", American government is stingy with its democracy. We cannot imagine what kind of life the American blacks lived a hundred years ago. American statesmen have shown no mercy to the people living in theri country, let alone others outside the country. In recent years, the trend of autarchy in American government seems to be on the rise with the fast development of American economy after World War II.In this thesis, the author believes that the paradox of autarchy and democracy in American politics should not be a new thing only germinating and developing in recent eras. In the author's eyes, the combined use of autarchy and democracy as political measures in America has its own deep root in American history– that is"Jacksonian Democracy". This thesis studies the background, connotations, and limitations of Jacksonian Democracy, and at last, tries to analyze the reasons of Jacksonian Democracy, which could also be seen as the reasons of the paradox of autarchy and democracy in American politics.
