The American sinology is a relatively new academic field in China. This thesis starts with the definition of sinology, analyzes the origin and evolution of American sinology, and further explains the orientation and characteristics of the orientation. Such landmark sinologists in the transformation of American sinology as E. C. Bridgman, Samuel W. Williams and John King Fairbank had all resided in China for decades. They did not only have access to first-hand materials, but were able to conduct research from their unique perspective. The orientation of American sinology is demonstrated in detail, ranging from the diversification of sinologists and research objects to the division in disciplines relating to sinology in American universities. The characteristics of this orientation are accordingly defined and further explained in this thesis as"changes"on the basis of"without changes". The conclusion deals with the evolution and orientation of American sinology, and further analyzes the causes of the"changes": the special cultural perspective of sinologists, the development of international academic circles and the mutual exchanges between China and the United States especially after the normalization of China-U.S. relations. My final suggestion is that more platforms be provided to facilitate sinologists and American sinology as well as the mutual exchanges between China and the United States.
