The Aesthetics Characteristics Of Ang Lee Films

Ang Lee, a Chinese film director, has won international recognition and awards ever since the shooting of "Pushing Hands" in 1991. The films he shoots not only favor him many glorious awards, such as the Oscar for the Best Director, but also win substantial box-office receipts. While China is striving for "Peaceful Rise", how to seek the soft power which is acknowledged by the mainstream is a big issue. Hence, the analysis of Ang Lee and his films, the combination of Chinese and western cultures, is crucial and helps to research how Chinese culture blends into the world and influences the films.Though the analysis of Ang Lee's living environment, cultural background and educational experience, the thesis believed that due to these comprehensive factors, his films were more complicated and profound than others. The thesis summed up the changes of his films and drew the conclusion that the aesthetics of his films formed under the influences of subjective and objective factors, such as life, culture and education and it developed with the conversion of "from Ethics to Humanity".After the research of Ang Lee's creation environment and his film was conducted, an idea was proposed in the thesis: the aesthetics characteristics of his films were "Restraint" and "Freedom". And then a further study was unfolded. The characteristics were explained from two angels: the outside manifestations, such as the plots and pictures; and the inner manifestations, such as the subjects. It has been convinced that the Ang Lee's films were affected by Chinese Confucianism and performed the apparent features of peace, restraint and moderation, whereas the most basic subject were freedom and breaking through all bondages. In fact, both Ang Lee and his films were rebellious, but the fundamental soul of freedom was concealed in the apparent restraint to achieve balance.In the end, the study of Ang Lee's incomparable international position and bold breakthrough were carried out to analyze the influence after the aesthetics characteristics of his films have formed.
