The Translator's Action Under Intertextuatity In The Translation Of Mao Zedong's Poetry

Since intertextuality becomes a prevalent keyword of literary criticism, its influence has radiated over many other fields. The combination of intertextuality and translation study expands the network of this theory as well as provides a new guide for translation. Mao Zedong poetry with capaciously temporal and spatial background gets its translation involved in intertextuality feasibly and necessarily. Intertextuality characteristic of complication and openness may reduce the translator to troubles; however, they should avoid its pitfalls and exert the merits, and cope with those intertextual elements so as to surmount the huge obstacles between different languages and cultures and promote the communication smoothly at a higher level. Under the guidance of this theory, the author discusses the translator's activities and functions in different phase of translation; furthermore, the research covers several English versions instead of a single one and put effort to analyze the specific management to intertextualtity and the resulted effect. The contributions and limitations of this theory to the translation of Mao's poems are concluded, which facilitates intertextual translation to transfer cultural connotations of the source text to people speaking different languages, who can also share Chinese profound culture. Besides introduction and conclusion, the thesis includes four parts as follows:In Chapter 1, the author looks back the source and development of intertextuality in west and trims the thoughts about intertextuality mirrored in Chinese literary theory, meanwhile, sums up the classification of its forms and categories. In its process of diverse development, different scholars with distinct theoretical perspective lead the classification of its forms to rough-and-tumble, which necessary further analysis should be taken into consideration.In Chapter 2, interactive relationship between intertextuality and translation study is analyzed, in which the author points out tangibly that translation itself is a kind of intertextual activity, the relationship between them is right a "dialogue". And intertextual features of Mao's poetry in terms of manifest intertextuality and constitutive intertextuality with many examples are also elaborated in this chapter.Chapter 3 lays great stress on those intertextual activities and subjectival function when the translator engages in intertextual reading, decision-making, intertextual writing in translation resulted from the anxiety of influence.In Chapter 4, the author puts emphasis on translator's concrete operation by anxiety arisen from various influences. In other words, the translator mediates intertextual elements of the original text in the heterogeneous language and culture by means of correspondingly specific measures, aiming at establishing commensuration between the target text and the original text, and reconstructing the canonization of the source text in the idiosyncratic culture.
