In Chinese contemporary literature, Wang Meng’s novel is unique for hisdiversified thoughts and pioneering art form. It is difficult to make clear whichpredecessor his works were inherited from. Although you can find in his works subtlebut ubiquitous intertextuality from classic literature.Through careful study of novels of Wang Meng, the author is trying to find out theinterconnections between Wang Meng’s and his predecessor’s literature. Theory ofintertextuality, dialogue theory, text reception theory, history of contemporaryliterature are used to study the intertextuality of Wang Meng’s novels, by methods ofcombining internal and external research, comparative study, history and theorycombination methodology.This thesis starts with the introduction section of the object of study–intertextuality of the novel of Wang Meng. It states the reasons why studying WangMeng’s novel by way of exploring its intertextuality and follows by the introductionthe theory of intertextuality and defines its concept used in this article. Insummarizing its study of Wang Meng, this thesis indicates the value of the whole newaspect of intertextuality study of Wang Meng.The main part of the thesis depicts that Wang Meng ’s hard work on classicalliterature, the era of Chinese revolution under the influence of Soviet Union, exile inXinjiang imposed distinct mark in his literature intertextuality. By the skills ofreference、collage、imitation、parody, pieces of Chinese classic literature, Soviet andUyghur literature and music had inlaid in the text of Wang Meng’s novel. Theseinlaid pieces,the essential parts of reader’s reception of interaction and heterogeneityin Wang Meng’s novel, do create exotic and colorful reading experience. The inlaidtext, together with the context, transforms into whole new meaning and, at the same time, maintains its own viability in literarymemory. How Wang Meng uses these heterogeneous texts in his novel reveals hisattitude toward them. Three types: follow with appreciation、 dispose withrecklessness、banter with funny fancy. Due to the readers’ literary memory、culturalpsychology、intuition of interpretation and the strong initiative of Wang Meng toguide the direction, readers are incline to probe deep into intertextualcontents.Nevertheless,the interpretation of intertextual contents becomes a challengebecause of less literary training of the readers and the intended obscurity by the author.To a certain extent, intertextuality is a tacit understanding between author andreader.The literary memory of reader is essential for the interpretation ofintertextuality. Reader factor is indispensable in Wang Meng’s novels which regardhighly on reader dialogue and interaction.Finally, the author summarizes, with conclusions and reflections, when exploring thenovels of Wang Meng from the perspective of intertextuality.
