Study On ChenDuxiu's Thoughts During May Fourth Movement

Chen Duxiu is a philosopher of pioneer in modern China who viewed "ethics consciousness" as the last and most fundamental consciousness for modern China.In his mind, at stake of a nation, consciousness instead of patriotism would be the priority for people to save his nation. Rise and fall of one nation is inseparable from morality of its people. Therefore, inferior morality of people will lead to decline of nation while improvement of morality is the way to save the nation. As a result, improving morality of people is the key to save the nation and is the true and long-lasting love of China.It is only by an absolute "ethics revolution" that morality of people can be improved. In fact inferior morality of Chinese is rooted from old tradition of Confucius which is the root of Chinese traditional ethics politics, and is the origin of inferior morality of Chinese, and is out of tides of modern society. To save the nation and improve morality by Confucius is like to aim south while driving northward. No doubt must Confucius be abandoned to develop modern society, for consolidations of both no way exist.Criticizing the old morality is to replace it by new ethics and morality. The core of new morality lies in freedom and liberty while the true meaning of life is to pursue happiness.. Thus new ethics, new morality, and new life attitude give birth to new youth who are the hope of nation and source of rise.In his view of point, "Ethics has great influence on politics, which is best exemplified in China." As a conclusion, "ethics consciousness" is the last and most fundamental consciousness for modern China.After all, Chen Duxiu's philosophy seems not systematical by one series of theoretical books, but his proposition of integrating the country and saving its people is the reflection of his thoughts on "ethics salvation" which in others words is "ethics revolution" or " ethics consciousness.This article is to study thoughts of Chen Duxiu by the main line of "ethics salvation", "ethics revolution" and "ethics consciousness".
