Lin Shu is the first translator of Chinese translation literature, and his novels have haunted people's imagination in late Qing and early Repulican China .In this paper, by two famous works in Lin's translation,Uncle Tom's Cabin and Ivanhoe, the relationship of Lin's tanslation novels and Chinese literature are analysed according to the features of his translation works which are different from traditional novels. There are four chapters in this paper:Chapter 1 ,introduction. In this part, the review of study about the topic and the direction of research in this paper were introduced.Chapter 2,Lin Shu and Lin's translation novels.Firstly,Lin Shu's life and Lin's translation novels are introduced. The reasons for his taking up translation are shown by the time background of reformism after Western Learning and Reform Movement of 1898.Secondly, cultural alternatives of Lin Shu facing, namely seeking newness and change were shown. Dow to that he has been influenced by classical culture for long time, he had deep love for tradition, but his translation already have some foreign qualities keeping traditional form and content of literature. Finally, the translation thoughts and the earliest references provided by Lin Shu for Chinese cultural modern transformation are analysed from the preface, postscript, introductory note, faithfulness, introductory remarks, and translator's words of his translation works.Chapter 3,the cut and adaptation and amplification parts are searched by the contrast between Uncle Tom's Cabin ,Ivanhoe and their original works. And the reasons of the cut and adaptation and amplification are analysed.Chapter 4,the features of modern novel reflected in Lin's translation works.Firstly, from the new narrative methods in Lin's translation works, such as flashback, into syria, limiting the narrative point of view and so on,and from the creative transformation to historical biography tradition and the form of text legend etc,in the Chinese literature, the new form and method provided by Lin Shu for Chinese literature creation in the transformation time are studyed.Scendly,by Lin Shu's hesitaion for the focus of translation,Lin's developing to the transformation of Chinese literature is analysed:Lin Shu kept tradition focusing on plot and figure in translation, meantime,he selectively translated the scenic and mental description offering the earliest references for the change from plot-center to character-background-center,and developing the earliest readers for the modern transformation of Chinese literature.Thirdly,Lin Shu formed fresh, graceful, concise and elegant language style by absorbing the essence of traditional language and combining punch lines of western literature and his own personal creation. But this is also contradictory:it promoted the speading of western literature in the literary transformation time for providing the bridge between Chinese literature and western literature, as well as obstructed literary transformation for its classical Chinese. Conclusion:The influence of Lin's tanslation novels to the modern transformation of Chinese literature. Many writers in Lin Shu' time were influenced by his translation, and most writers in May Fourth Movement time all were growing with Lin's translation.Chinese literature developed from the classic to the modern thanks to the efforts of the two generations of writers. When he translated foreign novels,he tried to blend Chinese tradition into the translation works in order to avoid Chinese traditional culture dying out for the foreign cultural invasion.Taking the stand on the centered culture to treat the differences between Chinese literature and world literature,Lin's translation novels play a role as a great pioneer in the modern transformatiom of Chinese literature.
