A Study on Distribution and Risk Factors of Unintentional Injuries of Stay-at-home Children in Rural Area of Anhui ProvinceObjective The main aims of this study were to explore the distribution and risk factors of unintentional injuries among children away from their parents and living in rural area of Anhui province and to provide the basic information for the development of unintentional injury intervention program. Methods 3 617 students were recruited from Changfeng county of Anhui province with stratified sampling method and a survey was conducted using questionnaires. Unconditional univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the situation of unintentional injuries among 1614 children away from their parents during the past one year and on its influencing factors. Results The number of children away from their parents accounted for 45.83% of the total students with the main type of guardianship was single-parent (55.82%). The incidence of unintentional injuries of students was 32.25%. The incidence of unintentional injuries of boys (36.43%) was higher than that of girls (27.44%) (χ2=32.340,P<0.001). The incidence of unintentional injuries among children was 32.25% and among children away from was 40.90%, which was significantly higher than that of children with parents (24.95%) (χ2=101.730, P<0.001). The main reasons for unintentional injuries of students were fall and animal-related. Seven kinds of unintentional injuries including fall, transportation or animal-related factor for children who were away from their parents, were higher than that of children with parents around. There were significant differences between stay-at-home children and their counterpart in Cohesion, Expressiveness, Independence, Intellectual-Cultural Orientation and Control subscales of FES-CV. And there were significant differences between stay-at-home children and their counterpart in introversion-extroversion, neuroticism subscales of EPQ. Data from univariate analysis showed that unintentional injuries of children without family around were associated with sex, stay-at-home, only child, grade, doing housework, types of custody, Introversion-Extroversion, Neuroticism, Cohesion, Conflict and Achievement orientation. Results from multivariate analysis indicated that unintentional injuries of children were associated with sex, stay-at-home, and grade, doing housework, E-dimension, N-dimension, Cohesion and Conflict. Conclusion Many factors were found to be involved in unintentional injuries among children who were away from parents, especially regarding the family environment and the individual personality. Special preventive measures should be taken to reduce the incidence of unintentional injuries among rural children who were away from their parents. A Study on Mental Health Status of Stay-at-home Children in Rural Area of Anhui ProvinceObjective: the aims of this study were to descript the mental health status and self-concept of stay-at-home children and to explore the difference of the mental health status and self-concept between stay-at-home children and non-stay-at-home children and to provide the basic information for the development of mental health intervention program. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 2 731 students were selected randomly from Changfeng County was conducted to collect information on mental health and self-concept, as measured by the mental health diagnosis test and the Piers-Harris children's self-concept scale. Two types of children were classified for data analysis. Results: Stay-at-home children accounted for 55.14 % among the total students; the main type of custody was single parent custody (44.53%). There were significant differences between boys and girls on physical abuse, sexual abuse and the total score of Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. The mental health status of stay-at-home children was poor, with significant difference between stay-at-home children and their counterparts (41.17±12.25 Vs 40.14±13.11, t=2.011, P<0.05). Stay-at-home children and non-stay-at-home children did differ significantly on the total scores of self-concept (52.48±14.29 Vs 55.24±15.10, t=4.648, P<0.01). Data from univariate linear analysis showed that mental health of children was associated with sex, stay-at-home, the level of family economic status, Behavior, Intellectual competence and school status, Anxiety, Popularity, Happiness and satisfaction By the multivariate linear regression analysis, we found that the variables the total scores of the P-H, gender, worse level of family economic status, stay-at-home, Elder generation custody, Peer custody were independent variables for mental health of students. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that stay-at-home children have a greater risk of mental health problems than non-stay-at-home in rural Anhui province, China. And this study provided useful baseline information on mental health of children and identified important risk factors that would be important in planning prevention strategies.
