Higher vocational education emphasizes to train students to learn special skills for special professions. Students in advanced vocational colleges are special groups which are quite different from those of ordinary university ones or senior high school ones, so in advanced vocational college English teaching, we should emphasize not only to train students master necessary English language knowledge, but also to train their ability to use the English language practically. In their English teaching process, reading teaching is regarded as the most important. The purpose of English reading teaching is to improve students'reading comprehension ability, and more importantly, to improve their ability of using the language practically.Because of the influence of traditional English teaching methods, a lot of English teachers of advanced vocational colleges only stress the importance of vocabulary and grammar in teaching, while ignore the teaching, activating and applying of schema knowledge which is closely related to the reading material. Meanwhile as far as the students are concerned, most of them are poor in English. In their English reading, there are always too many new words, the sentence structures are too complex, what they have learned about the background knowledge is quite limited, they are not familiar with most of the articles'genre, and they and difficulty in mastering the structure and main idea of the articles. What's more, in the English textbook of advanced vocational colleges, most of the articles are practical ones. Therefore, the author thinks it is necessary to apply Formal Schema in English practical articles reading teaching in advanced vocational colleges.Formal Schemata, which is also called Rhetorical Schemata, refers to the knowledge which is related to the articles'genre and structure. Certain content requires certain form to make it clear, so different articles have different genre and different structures. Only after sufficiently training, the reader gets familiar with the genre, and forms different kinds of schemata, can they deal with the reading material easily. In reading, readers need to know different material's structure and characteristics, find the related information in the material, use the schemata in their mind to understand the material quickly and correctly. In a highly developed marketing economy society, it is a basic requirement for advanced vocational college students to comprehend the practical articles, so it is the most important thing to improve students'English practical articles'reading comprehension ability. In all, English teachers in advanced vocational colleges should apply Formal Schemata in their practical articles'reading teaching to improve students'reading comprehension ability.The thesis consists of six chapters:Chapter One Introduction. State the aim, importance and necessity of the research.Chapter Two Literature Review. Make clear what is Schema Theory, the relationship between Schema Theory and reading comprehension, and how to apply Formal Schemata into English practical articles'reading teaching.Chapter Three Experiment. Put forward the research questions; state the objects of the research, the instruments, the methods of collecting and processing data, and the exact experiment procedure.Chapter Four Data Analysis and Discussion. Use SPSS software to analyze the collected data, and discuss the results.Chapter Five Conclusion. Draw conclusions to the results of the experiment.Chapter Six Limitations and Further Research in this field.
