This thesis introduces reading models, schema theory and correlative researches. Based on the schema theory, the study explores the influence of formal schemata on non-English majors' reading comprehension by experimental methods. The result shows that performance in experimental class is much better than that in control class. This testifies that activating non-English Majors' formal schemata for a text can improve their reading comprehension.The whole thesis falls into six parts. In part one, the necessity and the significance of the present study is introduced by analyzing the current situation of the Chinese non-English majors' reading level. Part two is concerned with literature review involving important reading models and valuable research in China and abroad. Part three puts forward the schema theory and formal schemata for different structures. Part four gives a detailed introduction to and description of the research method and its contents. Part five deals with data analysis. SPSS 11.5 is used to process the survey data including analysis of test., questionnaire. Part six is general discussion reiying on the results of the previous part and general conclusion pointing out the value and limitations of the study and putting forward some suggestions for further research.
