After a development of one hundred years, oil painting has basically realized its localization in which imagery oil painting is an important achievement. The localization of oil painting beginning in contemparary times has a characteristic of acceptance as the mainstream and compromise as well as mediation as the branch. Imagery oil painting is known as a kind of oil painting which characterized in possessing traditional Chinese beauty and aesthetic features and is different from concrete images and abstrctionism oil painting. The following are three features of imagery oil painting language. First, poetic tradition which is embodied in the utilization of the context of images and the utilization of concrete images in Chinese painting. Second, structure as the core. Greatly influenced by modernism painting and design, structure as the core in imagery oil painting mainly shows in the aspect of the operation of the whole design, delicate processing of some minor parts. Third, local and ethnic traits. China has been in an age of transformation since the end of 1890s. The classification of imagery oil painting is centered around this transforming period. According to this standard, first phase is from the early beginning of the twentieth century to 1950s, and second phase from1950s to 1980s, and third phase from 1980s to the present. Of course there are some problems in imagery oil painting such as the degree to mediate and compromise, and difference in painting talent between the East and the West. Compared with concrete images and abstratractionism painting, imagery oil painting though is not the mainstream of the oil painting, it is doomed to enjoy a bright future due to its unique style.
