The C-E Translation Of Cultural Image In Classical Chinese Poetry: A Perspective Of Cultural-Specific Items

The thesis analyzes how to translate cultural image in classical Chinese poetry (CCP). The translation of CCP is difficult because it contains too many images, and the biggest difficulty is that these images contain unique Chinese culture, and what's more, these images which contain the unique Chinese culture are hard to be understood by the Westerners, we call these images cultural images. Therefore, as a special phenomenon of literature, cultural image is very important to the Chinese literature, especially to the CCP which contains rich images. In the process of globalization, cultural image in different cultural backgrounds finds an easier access to foreign readers. Therefore, successful translation of CCP between languages is achievable.The writer of the thesis has found that there exist many problems in the previous researches on cultural image in CCP: The theoretical value of the translation of cultural image in CCP has not gained enough attention; The boundary between cultural image and image in CCP is confusing; the research on the translation strategies of cultural image is not systematic, mostly concentrating on the dispute of domestication and alienation, etc.In view of this, the thesis starts with poetic image, combined with culture, and analyzes thoroughly the cultural image in CCP. The analysis of cultural image in CCP should be emphasized. The thesis tries to advance a tentative definition, and make tentative classifications of cultural image in CCP. Cultural image in CCP should be distinguished from poetic image, and the research on the translation strategies of cultural image should be kept away from the dispute of domestication and alienation, so that more suitable translation strategies of cultural image could be found.The thesis tries to summarize the translation strategies of cultural image in CCP from the perspective of Aixela's cultural-specific items (CSIs). The thesis introduces CSIs theory systematically and points out the similarities between CSI and cultural image, and the eleven translation strategies summarized by Aixela can be transplanted into the translation process of cultural image. The translation strategies of Aixela are explained in detail and arranged in order, and it is not only the simple binary opposition of domestication and alienation, but domestication and alienation in varied extents.The thesis classifies cultural image in CCP into two aspects according to the classifications of CSIs posed by Aixela, i.e. cultural image in CCP having no equivalence in target culture and having different textual status in target culture, and gives examples respectively to discuss how the CSIs theory with its translation strategies raised by Aixela is applied in the translation of different classes of cultural image in CCP. The author of the thesis analyzes elaborately the considerable examples of English versions of CCP and raises opinions and advice.
