A Study On Flower Image Realization In English Translation Of Classical Chinese Poetry From The Perspective Of Palmer's Cultural Linguistics

The American linguist anthropologist Gary Palmer combined three traditional branches of linguistics, Boasian linguistics, ethnosemantic, and the ethnography of speaking together with cognitive linguistics and then formed a new theory called cultural linguistics, which is aimed at interpreting languages from a cultural perspective.Image is one of the most distinguished characteristics of cultural linguistics. Therefore, cultural linguistics is basically a theory about image. The image referred to in the theory is not only concerned about those specific images but also those gained through perceptual and sensuous experiences. Palmer attaches great importance to the important role of culture and personal experience in the construction of image, especially the root function experience plays of image.The culture of flower has a profound effect in Chinese ancient history. In addition, it is great treasure in classical Chinese poetry. The English translation of flower images is not merely a matter of the reflection of Chinese culture, but exerts a great impact on the communication between Chinese and western cultures. This thesis tries to analyze the translation of flower images in classical Chinese poetry on the basis of Palmer's cultural linguistics and discusses how to apply both the language and culture transmission flower images in a proper way. It is hoped that the analysis of the most representative image will be beneficial to image translation activities. Translation is not as simple an activity as from one culture to another, but a kind of complex cross-cultural communication involving many sorts of cultural factors. Accordingly, with the construction of various theories on translation, cultural factors are becoming increasingly important, which has an enlightening effect on the translation of the whole Chinese classical literary works.
