Ruan is an expressive traditional Chinese music instrument. In the modern Chinese orchestra, not only is it able to fill in the alto and tenor range in the plucked-string section, it is also the support for both the soprano and bass instruments. It has developed from being an accompaniment instrument to one that is now capable of playing solo music and even large-scale concertos. Chinese instrumental music is increasingly scientific and systematic in its development. There is growing concern about the Ruan despite it being relatively late in its own development, thus its performance techniques are unceasingly being improved on. There has been much done by forefathers in this field, though there are still many problems that await our investigation. Thus, this paper aims to allow more scholars to further understand this instrument.
