As the title indicates, my paper aims at the characterization of Rudolph, the hero of the opera La Boheme. He is one of the classical characters in Puccini's operas and it is a challenge to play the role of him in terms of music expression, dramatic performance and vocal techniques.Starting from the background of La Boheme and the development of realism in literature, my paper attempts to reveal that the opera not only stick to the very tradition of Italian operas but also combines elements of romanticism and realism by means of expounding the realism disposition of Puccini's works and exploring the humanities content of "nobody stories". Then, through investigation of the story, persona relationships and music motives etc. of the opera, my paper makes analysis of Puccini's mastery of the opera and his utilization of music language, exploring the lyric and dramatic properties of its music and traits of its characters. Finally, I focus on arias of Rudolph which are typical in the opera, making a close study of the music and dramatic languages of him, a particular character under a particular context.Besides the introduction in which I briefly explain the title, my paper consists of three chapters. Chapter I is about realism and the opera La Boheme. Chapter II is an interpretation of the dramatic structure and the music language of the opera. Chapter III is an analysis of the performance of the artistic image of Rudolph.
