Puccini is a great Italian romantic operas composer whose operas represent a deepaffection and perfect creation for the female roles. There are three composing featuresof creating female roles in his operas. Firstly, people from the lower social classes weremore concerned and preferred in Puccini’s opera. Secondly, most of his operas set loveas the storyline, in order to manifest the tragic fate of the female roles. Thirdly, thedominant status of the female roles and the fates of them were particularly highlightedand stressed. The reasons causing these features of the female roles in his operas are theimpact of the social background and living environment, the characteristics of Puccinihimself, and the thoughts of realism. In this paper, the typical roles including Mimi,Tosca, Cio-Cio-San, Turandot and Liu, were selected in order to elaborate how thefemale role in Puccini’s operas were created.
