A Study On Liang Chi-chao's Translation Thoughts

In the Chinese modern history, Liang Chi-chao (1873--1929) is not only a reputable thinker, political activist, academic, but also an important critic on translation. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, he was active in the stage of translation in China. Liang Chi-chao's translation thoughts refer to many aspects such as the importance of translation, translation content, translation strategy, translation method, the style and language of translation, translation standard and so on. Although merely seen on some of his published articles, Liang Chi-chao's translation thoughts have still had a profound influence. These thoughts not only have promoted the development of the modern translation theory, but also have had a tremendous impact on later generations and provided them with a lot of inspiration. Based on the predecessor's research on Liang Chi-chao's translation thoughts, this thesis will make a more systematic pectination and excavation to Liang Chi-chao's translation thoughts. This thesis has been divided into three chapters. Chapter one will give a short statement about Liang Chi-chao's activities in translation and make a comment on Liang Chi-chao's position in the modern translation literature of China. Chapter Two is the core of the thesis, which will make a deep exploration to Liang Chi-chao's translation thoughts mainly from these perspectives such as the importance of translation, translation content, translation strategy, translation method, the style and language of translation, translation standard and so on, and make a specific analysis to the causes of Liang Chi-chao's translation thoughts from multiple perspectives. Chapter Three will summarize the contributions of Liang Chi-chao's translation thoughts and give the evaluation of Liang Chi-chao's translation thoughts. In the end, the writer will summarize the full thesis and give a conclusion that Liang Chi-chao's translation thoughts and his actions in translation practice show the later generations such point: translation is not merely a behavior of inter-conversion between languages; it is also related with politics and serve politics. Translation can be a tool of participating in politics which can be used by the translators to publicize their own political opinions and agitate people's intelligence, and can affect even change the ideology of the public. In a word, the thesis has made a comprehensive analysis of Liang Chi-chao's translation thoughts and their causes, highlighted his contributions to translation, and given a more objective evaluation about his translation thoughts so as to make a beneficial supplement for studying Liang Chi-chao's translation thoughts completely.
