Chen ZhiFo's Art Study Of Meticulous Chinese Paintings Of Flowers And Birds

Chinese painting with the wide-ranging and deep-going characteristics has a glorious and time-honored history. And in different periods of time there will be extraordinary artists with representative achievement. The specific study of individual artist can reveal the artist's formal characteristics and art thoughts and develop the aesthetic awareness, essential characteristics and art laws in Chinese painting history. For its rigorous modeling, tight and orderly techniques, the traditional Chinese realistic painting during Song period had already achieved a high level so that quite groups of people felt discouraged and frustrated. In addition, the emergence of literary paintings gradually marginalized paintings of this style. Although famous artists such as QianXuan, WangYuan, BianWenjin emerged during the time of Yuan and Ming Dynasty, there was still no significant progress. When it came to the Qing Dynasty, the Mi Sophie's powder flavor spread among the altar of painting, which brought the Painting almost to the brink of extinction during the Republic of China. Against this background, Chen Zhifo succeed in adopting exotic styles, patterns, colors and decorations on the basis of traditional painting styles of Song and Yuan Dynasties, pushing the development of flower-and-bird painting in the meticulous way to a new climax. He rejuvenated the meticulous painting by creating a new style featuring refreshment, easiness and elegance. Through the study of Chen Zhifo's art, we can better understand the relationship between the ancestors and future generations, between the ancient style and new development. Tapping into the traditional paintings will help us to explore the artist expression in the contemporary aesthetic perspective and further develop Chinese meticulous painting in an innovative way.Analysis of literatures and specific cases is used as the main approach in this paper. Firstly, the development process of Chen Zhifo's style of flower-and-bird painting is demonstrated through reviewing his life and art origins. Secondly, the author analyzes the formal features of his painting in the perspectives of composition, images, color and techniques. Thirdly, his paintings are combination of ancient meanings and the spirit of the time, which are rooted in local with cosmopolitan blossom showing the meaning of life by integrating cool easiness and colorful enthusiasm; and his painting thought is analyzed in form of "observing, writing, imitating and reading." Finally, the author elaborates the forming process of Chen Zhifo Painting School and its style and techniques to show his historical status in art history and his influence on flower-and-bird painting development in modern and even contemporary China.The study of Chen Zhifo' paintings is thought-provoking for us to explore the expressing ways of the flower-and-bird painting aiming at highlighting the art features and aesthetic values in its modern form as well as the significance of inheritance and innovation in art development.
