Jack London (1876-1916) has a high reputation in the literature world. His works are popular at home and abroad. The Call of the Wild, possesses very great forces. Most researches on the work are about the content, the theme and the introduction and comments on the writing methods. Also some reviewers unscramble it from the point of naturalism, and they set forth the influence of environment and inheritance on the animals. This thesis is intended to analyze the employment of alienation to embody the deeper meaning in this work.Alienation is a reflection of people's activities and the results of those activities, which are objectively ruled by an independent power that is hostile to the people themselves. And relatively speaking, it also refers to a process during when people turn themselves from a positive subject to a negative object. Alienation of Western literature is a timeless topic. During the 20th century, due to many factors such as the history of reality and human understanding, the eternal theme of alienation in modern literature has been comprehensively deepened. As an individual in the society, Jack London is influenced by the theory of alienation inevitably which can be found in The Call of the Wild.This thesis is divided into three chapters. In Chapter One, alienation displayed on the binary split between the performance of sense and sensibility will be analyzed. The Second Chapter will discuss alienation displayed on the split of ideal and reality. Chapter Three will refer to alienation displayed on the split of the creature and nature. The last part will make a conclusion that Jack London expresses his thinking of the society with the help of his dog hero.
