In recent years, our society pays more and more attention to English learning and application, which leads to a much higher requirement to our English majors. Today's English majors after graduation should have the ability of independently thinking and acquiring knowledge as well as creativity. Since our traditional model of English teaching that teachers play the dominated roles in the class does not only satisfy the requirement of modern English teaching, but also discourage students'thinking and creativity, what's more, which has confined the development of students' personality and the capability of learner autonomy. Therefore, this kind of traditional model of English teaching is strongly required to convert into the modern model one of student-centered.However, our students, especially students in the independent institute, rely on the teachers much more than those of other colleges. Because as the students of independent institute, just taking the students of Chongqing Nanfang Translators'College as an example, usually they have less self-confidence, poor learning ability and learning methods, lacking of learning motivation is also a serious problem. So if they leave the teachers and classrooms, most students even have no idea of how can he or she learn English by themselves, let alone setting learning goals, making learning plans, arranging their spare time, regulating their studying process and so on.From above, this study means to analyze those problems existed in the learner autonomy and explore the methods of improving those English majors'capabilities'of learner autonomy in the independent institute. In this paper, there are four parts:Part One:Introduction. There is a questionnaire designed to examine the degree of the students' learner autonomy, which aims to get the information from the English majors in Chongqing Nanfang Translators'College about the current situation in their automatic learning process. Then according to the results, the author analyzes present problems of the students'learner autonomy and their causes.Part Four:Raising strategies and suggestions to solve the existing problems and thus to improve the students'capabilities of learner autonomy. Linking the teaching and studying practice, the author provides several approaches from both students and teachers on how to bring up as well as to improve those English majors'capabilities of learner autonomy in independent institutes.
