The art of calligraphy is the crystallization nurtured by the brilliant chinese civilization, it is also one of the most ancent art style in our traditional culture. China's Imperial Examination system,which lasted for almost 1300 years,is called the fifth Great Invention along with the Four Great Inventions in Chinese history.As an official election system,it had made great impacts on the development of literature, art and other fields,and its effects to calligraphy is especially profound.In order to state the impacts on the art of calligraphy by China's ancient Imperial Examination system,this article makes observation,analysis and comparison along with the development of Tang, Song, Ming and Qing dynasties,to prove that under the guidence and influnce of Imperial Examination, calligraphy in Tang Dynasty had been popularized and improved overall, hampered in Song that cannot be placed on a par in the Tang Dynasty,and fell into imprisonment in Ming and Qing Dynasties whcin was submerged in 'Taige' body and 'Guange' body without personality and innovation.At the same time, this article also pointed out that the Imperial Examination system has a positive role and impact for the work of calligraphy connoisseur, College Entrance Examination, Civil Service Examinations and so on.This article seeks to clarify the relationship between calligraphy and Imperial Examination by the collection, collation and analysis of historical data,and arouse emphasis on academics and further systematic study on the relationship between the two.
