| In recent two decades, like other languages, English has experienced enormous changes due to many factors, such as politics, economics, culture, etc, among which the development of science and technology plays an important role. On one hand, the emergence of the new EST words is the best way to reflect the scientific and technological progress. On the other hand, the boom of EST words cause difficulties in reading sci-tech literature. Based on this problem, the author consults lots of books and articles about English EST words and everyday news on science and technology, and finds that websites, being the quickest and most widely spread medium, serve as a major cradle for the creation of EST words. It is imperative to make an analysis on EST words existing in the EST news. Among numerous media, the author makes the recent years' VOA EST news as the source, which involves about 100 items of news, and analyzes them both qualitatively and quantitatively. By qualitative approach, this thesis explores the reasons and methods of the coining of EST words as well as the features. By quantitative approach, EST words are analyzed from the angle of lexical density. With all the examples taken from the latest news which is from the end of 2008 to the beginning of 2009, the author tries to provide some help for news readers, especially those who are interested in news on science and technology as well as English learners interested in enlarging EST vocabulary.
